SMEs are the engine of internal economies since, in the case
of Mexico, they represent 52% of GDP and produce around 72% of jobs. According
to INEGI, there are more than 4 million SMEs in Mexico.
What are SMEs?
SMEs (or PyMEs) is the name given to businesses considered
small and medium, that is, small and medium-sized companies, hence its acronym.
These, it should be noted, are of great importance in a country due to their
influence on the national economy, both for their contributions to production
and for the distribution of goods and services, but also for the flexibility
they have to adapt to technological changes that they are happening, in
addition to the fact that on the other hand they represent a great potential
for job creation.
SMEs are the main engines of employment in a country and
generate great wealth for them.
Characteristics of
SMEs
They have capital provided by one or two people who
establish a “partnership”.
• The partners of these businesses are those who direct the
operation of the same
• The number of workers or employees grows and goes from 16
to 250 people
• They use more machinery and equipment, even though they
are more labor-based than capital-based
• They dominate and supply a larger market, although they do
not always serve local or regional clients. They can expand their production
for the national market and even for the international market
• They are constantly growing, that is, the micro-enterprise
tends to be small, the small one tends to be medium, and the median tends to be
large.
• They manage to earn tax benefits from the State based on
their sales and profits.
Typically, the size
of a business helps its classification. This means that there are small, medium
and large companies. In the case of SMEs, they are businesses or potential
businesses that seek to generate profits, but have low to medium-scale
operations.
Regarding the classification by size, small and medium-sized
companies have been added to microenterprises, which are still considered
within the name SME.
The classification of SMEs in Mexico depends on different
factors and is measured by the number of employees, the amount of sales (in
millions of pesos), as well as the maximum limit of both, which is obtained by
multiplying the total number of employees by 10 % and to that is added the
annual sales result of 90%.
The classification of
SMEs can be considered as follows:
• Microenterprises : Those that have a payroll of 10 or
fewer workers and an annual sales volume or general balance of less than 4
million pesos.
• Small companies : These are those with a payroll of 11 to
50 employees and an annual sales volume of a maximum of 100 million pesos.
• Medium-sized company : Those whose payroll does not exceed
100 employees, and an annual sales volume of up to 250 million pesos.
